Sediment control including bench-testing, visual clarity jars, and chemical treatment plans.

The entry of sediment, specifically those less than 2mm in size, into our water systems can have detrimental effects on the quality of water and the surrounding ecosystem. To help you comply with site erosion and sediment control regulations, we provide a range of services including testing of site water for total suspended solids and pH levels, as well as bench testing and flocculant control methods for Chemical Treatment Management Plans (CTMP).

Bench Testing

The bench testing process is carried out using a six-jar overhead stirrer, which imitates the mixing and settling conditions in a clarifier. Different amounts of flocculants are added to the sample to identify the most appropriate option for the sample type. Terra Scientific is proud to collaborate with Cirtex Industries and provide bench-testing services.
Testing is conducted in accordance with ASTM D2035-13 Standard practice for Coagulation-Flocculation Jar test of Water and Auckland Regional Council GD05 and TP227 guidelines.

Representative samples from your site are required for bench testing. This can either be at least 10L of site representative water sample or 2kg of soil (enough to fill a 2L ice-cream container). Please contact the laboratory if your site contains differing soil types as further samples may be required.

To ensure the safety of yourself and our team, samples must be properly sealed prior to submission.

Standard turnaround times are typically within 5 business days from sample receipt. Urgent turnarounds are available on request depending on the laboratory’s capacity and time of sample submission. A 50% surcharge applies to urgent chemistry analysis. Please contact us first if you require urgent analysis as these are dependent on laboratory availability.

Terra Scientific is proud to be working alongside Aqualutions as the main distributor for Sedimate™!

Recognised by Environmental Canterbury, Sedimate™ is an efficient and economical approach to manage site sediment discharges in a timely and practical manner. With Sedimate™, you can rapidly make an informed decision for your site water discharge.

Every Sedimate™ is customised to the specific combination of soil types and desired quality of discharge applicable to your site. This is achieved by using a sample of water with sediment collected from the site for the creation of each Sedimate™. Each Sedimate™ kit consists of three jars contained within a handy and sturdy unit. The jars are calibrated from the site-specific sample to be below, at and above the TSS compliance limit required for the site.

To calibrate these samples to your site, ideally 4L of sediment laden water needs to be gathered from an existing on-site water treatment system (sediment pond, baffle tank, decanting bund etc.).

 

The following is to be accounted for when collecting the samples for SedimateTM:

  • Field samples are the same nature as the discharge water.
  • Collected close to the surface but with the bottle fully submerged.
  • Delivered to the laboratory as soon as possible after sample collection (or kept chilled if unable to be delivered to the laboratory same day).
  • Include a description of the water treatment system from collection to discharge.
  • Specify the date and location (address and/or site name) of collection, and the discharge quality limit which must be met. This will determine the ‘limit’ for the Sedimate.
  • Not contain any chemical additives (such as flocculants).
  • Not be made up using dry soil samples.

 

Please note that dry soil samples, water with insufficient sediment content, or samples which have been stored incorrectly (or for too long after collection) may not be suitable for calibration and additional samples may be required.
